Masters (Coursework)

Dunedin
The Master of Teaching and Learning (MTchgLn) is a one-year intensive postgraduate degree for those who have already graduated with a bachelor's degree, or approved equivalent. This evidence-based programme may be endorsed in either Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary Education.
Entry Requirements
  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities) on the advice of the Dean, College of Education, who must be satisfied that, in accordance with Section 224 of the Education and Training Act 2020, Section 255(5) (a) and (b), the applicant satisfies the minimum requirements for admission to an initial teacher education programme as specified by the relevant professional body.
  2. Every applicant must have:
    1. a degree (at Level 7 or above on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework) with an average grade of at least B in the final year major subject requirements for a bachelor's degree (requiring papers worth at least 360 points) or in the course components for a postgraduate qualification; or,
    2. alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities).

Notes:

  1. At the time of selection a disposition to teach coupled with a proven academic record (B grade average) and appropriate levels of literacy and numeracy, and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi including te reo Maori proficiency will be sought. Applicants' suitability for the programme will be assessed by an interview.
  2. Applicants for the Secondary Education endorsement must possess a body of knowledge at NZQF levels 5-7 or higher within their entry qualification, relevant for teaching in particular secondary school subjects, as specified by the College of Education.

Masters (Coursework)

The Master of Business Administration (Otago MBA ) degree is an intensive two-phase programme. Phase One comprises ten months of on-campus study of core papers. This is followed by a highly flexible Phase Two of on-campus electives, international exchange or a business project.
Entry Requirements
  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Commerce).
  2. Every applicant must either
    1. be a graduate, or
    2. hold an acceptable professional qualification, or
    3. have experience in management or administration acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Commerce).
  3. Applicants will be expected to have first obtained a satisfactory result in the Graduate Management Admission Test or the Otago MBA Admission Test.
  4. Applicants who wish to enter the programme from the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration programme will be exempted from the provisions of regulation 1(c) if they have average grades of at least B+ in the six papers taken for the diploma.

Doctorate (PhD)

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree is primarily for Otago medical graduates who have completed published original research in any branch of medical science. The academic standard is equivalent to Doctor of Science (DSc). For more about studying medicine at Otago:
Entry Requirements
  1. A degree shall be awarded for published original contributions of special excellence in the appropriate discipline. An individual shall only ever be entitled to be awarded one Higher Doctorate from the University of Otago - applications for multiple Higher Doctorates are not permitted.
  2. Every candidate for a Higher Doctoral degree must have held a degree for at least five years before applying for admission to the degree.
  3. A candidate for the degree shall normally be a graduate of the University of Otago, or shall have completed a substantial proportion of the work to be presented while working in an academic or research unit of the University.

Bachelor

Entry Requirements
  1. Every programme of study shall satisfy the requirements for prerequisites, corequisites, and restrictions set out in the Prescriptions (published in the Guide to Enrolment).
  2. A candidate with outstanding results in a subject prior to entering University may be permitted by the Head of Department concerned to enrol for a paper at 200-level without having satisfied the normal prerequisites. In such cases the candidate shall not be credited with the prerequisite papers, but shall be exempted from including those papers in a Major Subject Requirement. A candidate may not, having passed any such paper at 200-level, enrol subsequently for any paper for which the exemption has been given.

Masters (Coursework)

The Master of Music (MMus) degree requires at least one year of full-time or its equivalent in part-time study. It may be awarded in Composition, Studio Production, or Performance.
Entry Requirements
  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities).
  2. Every applicant must either
    1. have been admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Music with Honours, or
    2. have been awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Music, or
    3. have alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities).

Masters (Coursework)

The Master of Science (MSc) is a two-year degree which encompasses both coursework and research. The first year involves mainly coursework and preliminary research preparation. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to existing fields of research, or to begin to develop new areas.
Entry Requirements
  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).
  2. Every applicant must either
    1. be a graduate with an average grade of at least B for the appropriate 300-level papers, or
    2. have alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).
  3. An applicant seeking admission to the thesis-only option of the programme (see regulation 2(c) below) on the basis of the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours or the Postgraduate Diploma in Science or equivalent must have achieved a grade of at least B+ for the research report, thesis preparation, or dissertation requirement of the qualification concerned.
  4. In considering an applicant's qualifications, regard will be had to the detail of the course of study followed to gain the qualification, as well as the applicant's performance in the programme.

Masters (Coursework)

The Master of Nursing Science ( MNSc ) offers an intensive two-year pathway to nursing registration for graduates of any discipline. A part-time study pathway is also available.
Entry Requirements
  1. Applications must be made by the due dates specified as part of the Guidelines for Admission into the Health Sciences Professional Programmes published at www.otago.ac.nz/healthsciences. ("the Guidelines")
  2. Selection of eligible students for admission to the Master of Nursing Science programme shall be made by the Nursing Admissions Committee ("the Committee") whose terms of reference shall be established by the Division of Health Sciences and approved by the Senate.
  3. Subject to these regulations and the Selection Criteria established by the Committee and approved by Senate from time to time and published as part of the Guidelines, selection for admission shall be in the discretion of the Committee.
  4. Without limitation, the Selection Criteria may include:
    1. academic performance;
    2. demonstration of appropriate attributes for admission into the programme.
  5. The Division of Health Sciences'

    policy promotes and facilitates equity for Maori students and students from other under-represented groups. In accordance with this policy, the Selection Criteria may provide for applicants in the following equity groups to be given preference for selection:
    • Maori
    • Resident Indigenous Pacific
    • Rural
    • Socioeconomic Equity
    • Refugee Background
  6. Recognition for inclusion in the Maori and Resident Indigenous Pacific equity groups shall be through demonstration of ancestry in accordance with the University's Ancestry Verification Procedures for Maori and Pacific Students and any other criteria the Senate may determine. Criteria for inclusion in the Rural, Socioeconomic Equity and Refugee Background equity groups shall be established by the Academic Board of the Division of Health Sciences and approved by the Senate. Criteria approved by the Senate shall be published as part of the Guidelines.
  7. Every applicant
    1. must hold an undergraduate degree requiring at least three years of fulltime study; or hold a bachelor's honours degree; or hold a bachelor's degree followed by a postgraduate diploma; or hold a master's or doctoral degree;
    2. Note: Applicants must have achieved a grade average of B or better in the final two years of the qualifying degree (except for a doctoral degree or a master's degree that is not graded) on which the application is based.
    3. must have provided a current curriculum vitae and a statement of interest.
  8. An applicant may be required to attend an interview.
  9. Notwithstanding any of the above provisions, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences) shall have discretion to approve a recommendation from the Committee concerning any applicant who, not having satisfied these regulations in a particular aspect, in the Committee's view warrants admission to the programme for exceptional reasons.
  10. Any applicant who
    1. is, or who has been, the subject of criminal charges; or
    2. is, or who has been, subject to disciplinary proceedings of a tertiary institution or professional body; or
    3. has been found to have an issue (whether in connection with their mental or physical health, or their professional attributes or conduct, or otherwise) that compromises or is likely to compromise their fitness to practise; or
    4. is found to have failed to declare a matter covered by 1((j)(i)-(iii);
  11. may be declined admission to the programme by the Committee on the recommendation of the Health and Conduct Review Group. Any offer of admission made before responses to medical tests or requests for information regarding an applicant's health status or past conduct have been received is conditional on the information received confirming the applicant's suitability for admission.

  12. The number of candidates to be admitted to the first year of the programme will be determined by the number of places available for clinical teaching.

Masters (Coursework)

The Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degree provides graduate training in different disciplines in dentistry. The aim of each discipline programme is to prepare graduate students to become registered dental specialists.
Entry Requirements
  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
  2. Every applicant shall hold the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery of the University of Otago or another equivalent dental qualification approved by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences), and be a registered dental practitioner in their country of practice or residence.

The 240-point Master of Advanced Nursing Practice (MAdvNP) is a focused pathway of study toward the prescribing scopes of practice in nursing under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (HPCAA) 2003.
Entry Requirements
  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
  2. Every applicant shall normally be required to satisfy all of the following:
    1. be a New Zealand registered nurse, with a current New Zealand Annual Practising Certificate, and be in good standing with the Nursing Council of New Zealand;
    2. have completed a minimum of three years' equivalent full-time relevant practice within the last five years (with at least one of the three years in full-time practice in New Zealand);
    3. be capable of meeting the requirements of Health Practitioner Competence Assurance Act (HPCA 2003) and Vulnerable Children's Act (VCA 2014) requirements, including immunisation & police clearance;
    4. have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences or equivalent with grades averaging a B or better;

Graduate Diploma

The Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology (PGDipCDTech) is a one year full-time course involving formal education, teaching and clinical practice held at the Faculty of Dentistry in Dunedin.
Entry Requirements
  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
  2. Every applicant shall present evidence of ability for advanced level academic study and
    1. have been admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Dental Technology, or
    2. have alternative qualifications and experience acceptable to the Dean of Dentistry (in considering an applicant's qualifications, regard will be given to the details of the course of study followed, as well as the applicant's performance).
  3. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their previous academic record (normally with a grade average of a B-/4.0 GPA or greater), academic achievements, reports from three referees and postgraduate English requirements (where applicable).
  4. Admission to the programme is limited to a number of candidates determined by the Council annually on the basis of available resources.

Graduate Diploma

The Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Subjects (PGDipArts) requires two semesters of full-time, or its equivalent in part-time, study. It entails a structured programme of postgraduate coursework and, in some instances, a piece of supervised research that counts for one or two of the required papers.
Entry Requirements
  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities).
  2. Every applicant shall
    1. either have been admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Arts majoring in the subject or subjects of study proposed;
    2. or have been admitted with the status of one who is entitled to proceed to the diploma;
    3. or have a qualification acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and produce evidence satisfactory to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of ability to proceed to the diploma.

Graduate Diploma

The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Management (PGDipHealMgt) is a programme of study that draws equally on public health and business administration. Participants study health systems and health economics in the public health programme and a suite of recommended papers in business.
Entry Requirements
  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
  2. Every applicant shall
    1. be a graduate or hold a professional qualification requiring at least three years of tertiary level study; or have alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences);
    2. present evidence of ability for advanced level academic study.
