Graduate Diploma

Entry Requirements

Students wishing to enrol in the GradDipTchLn(EC) must have a relevant bachelor's degree or higher (or be entitled to enrol for the Diploma with other qualifications of an equivalent standard).

Selection for entry is not automatic and is based on academic ability, involvement and interest in working with children and young people, community involvement, communication skills, and other personal qualities.

The selection process includes a police check and may include an interview.

If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet the requirements set out by Matatu Aotearoa | Teaching Council of New Zealand.

Masters (Coursework)

Main Campus
The Master of Counselling gives you the opportunity to extend your theoretical grounding and professional skills to work as a counsellor in a variety of settings.
Entry Requirements

Anyone wishing to enrol in the MCouns must have qualified for one of the following:

  • a degree from Aotearoa New Zealand with either acquired experience in counselling, teaching, nursing, social work, or an equivalent profession, or been deemed suitable for training as a counsellor; or
  • other approved qualifications of an equivalent standard.

If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements.

Selection will be based on academic attainment and other criteria, which will include an interview for admission to the professional counselling practice course (COUN675 Professional Counselling Practice I). The relevance and standard of previous studies and any subsequent professional work experience are the main criteria of approval. You will normally be expected to have at least a B Grade Point Average in your 300-level courses. You must also be vetted by police.

Vaccines required

The government has announced new vaccination requirements for the health and education sectors. This qualification requires students to undertake placements in the community, including in schools/kura, early childhood centres, or health/medical facilities.

For this qualification, you will be required to be vaccinated in line with the NZ Government regulations, and supply evidence of your vaccination status.

Graduate Diploma

Main Campus
The Postgraduate Diploma in Business provides the skills and competencies that will allow graduates to gain employment within the private and public sector in relevant business positions. It also provides a pathway to the Master of Business and Master of Professional Accounting programmes.

You must have a bachelor's degree with at least a B Grade Point Average in 300-level courses (or equivalent), and been approved to enrol.

Masters (Coursework)

Main Campus
The University of Canterbury's Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme is a key professional milestone for many aspiring and accomplished business leaders.
Entry Requirements

Students must be approved by the Dean of Business, who will take account of the relevance and standard of previous studies and experience.

Any bachelor's degree, or the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration, must have been completed with good grades, and at least five years' work experience is required.

Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration pathway

You may choose to first enrol in the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration and later progress into the full MBA programme. The Diploma includes the same core courses as the MBA, and you will attend the same classes as MBA students.

Bachelor

Main Campus
Product Design combines creative design, science, engineering, and business studies. Product designers plan and develop items for use in homes, businesses, and industry.
Entry Requirements

Admission to UC with University Entrance (or equivalent) is required to enrol.

Recommended preparation

Entry to the BProdDesign is open to anyone with entry to the University. However, it is strongly recommended that you have at least 14 credits in NCEA Level 2 science and mathematics. Those intending to take the Chemical Formulation Design major should ideally have 14 credits in NCEA Level 3 chemistry (or the IB/CIE equivalent of these).

Secondary school studies in related subjects such as digital technologies, technology, or design and visual communication would be an advantage.

Masters (Coursework)

Main Campus
The Master of Applied Finance and Economics is a joint master's degree in Finance and Economics that can be completed full-time in 12-18 months.
Entry Requirements

Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree that includes intermediate microeconomics, introductory business finance, a calculus-based mathematics course, and an introductory statistics course, and be approved for entry.

Opportunities to meet the entry requirements prior to enrolling in the MAFE

English language pathway option at CCEL

Students who are at IELTS level 6.0 are welcome to enrol for CCEL English for Academic Purposes 2 (EAP2) online to enhance their English language proficiency. A grade of B+ or higher in this course satisfies UC English language requirements for postgraduate study.

If you do not have the entry requirement of intermediate level microeconomic theory or business finance, you are welcome to enrol online in either ECON207 Intermediate Microeconomics - Households and Government or FINC201 Business Finance.

The Bachelor of Commerce with Honours is for high-achieving students with a relevant bachelor's degree. A choice of seven subjects is available.
Entry Requirements

You must have qualified for a bachelor's degree, and satisfied the prerequisites for your major subject. Prerequisites vary between departments, but normally good grades in 300-level courses in the subject is required.

Graduate Certificate

Main Campus
This Certificate gives health professionals and others interested in the health sector the chance to critically examine a range of significant issues in health sciences, and where relevant to improve their professional practice.
Entry Requirements

To enrol, you must have completed a relevant bachelor's degree or an equivalent health qualification.

Prior qualifications and experience will be taken into account in approving your application.

One or more courses or research may require vaccination

The government has announced new vaccination requirements for the health and education sectors. At UC, our programmes are strongly connected to our communities of practice. For many of our programmes, you will not be able to complete research or practice-oriented courses if you are not vaccinated. This is due to research/practice taking place in health centres and schools/kura where all employees and volunteers are required to be vaccinated.

For these courses you will be required to be vaccinated in line with the NZ Government regulations, and supply evidence of your vaccination status.

The building industry needs more design professionals with technical mastery in their discipline, and advanced knowledge and skills in whole-building performance, collaboration, integrated design, and digital methods.
Entry Requirements

To enrol for the Postgraduate Certificate of Architectural Engineering (PGCertArchEng) you must have completed a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours, or equivalent.

If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements.

It is strongly advised to have at least one year of professional practical experience before applying. Your application will be approved based on the standard of your previous studies and work experience. Students will normally be expected to have at least a B Grade Point Average in their 300-level courses.

The United Nations defines a disaster as a disruption of social and community function, involving so many losses and destructive impacts that affected communities and regions are unable to cope using their own resources.
Entry Requirements

To apply for the Master of Disaster Risk and Resilience (MDRR), you will need to have:

  • a bachelor's degree which is relevant to Disaster Risk and Resilience, normally with a B Grade Point Average or higher in the final year; and
  • 15 points from STAT 100-level courses, or equivalent.
    Note:
    This prerequisite may be waived at the discretion of the Programme Coordinator.
