Graduate Diploma

Main Campus
The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (PGDipTchgLn) combines research-informed knowledge and critical inquiry with practice-based experiences in schools to prepare you for a career in teaching.
Entry Requirements

Applicants for the PGDipTchgLn programme will need an Aotearoa New Zealand bachelor's degree with a B Grade Point Average in their 300-level courses (or other qualifications of an equivalent standard). Those entering the Secondary Education endorsement will need previous studies in a subject relevant to the Aotearoa New Zealand secondary school curriculum eg, te reo Maori, English, biological sciences, mathematics, history, physical education, etc.

You will be approved for entry on the recommendation of a Selection Committee. Selection for entry is based on:

  • academic ability, involvement and interest in working with children and young people, community involvement, communication skills, and other personal qualities as outlined in the Guide to Applying
  • a police check, referees' reports, and an interview
  • a short literacy and numeracy test.

If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet the requirements set out by Matatu Aotearoa | Teaching Council of New Zealand.

Masters (Coursework)

The Professional Master of Computer Science (PMCS) offers practical learning in the rapidly advancing area of computer technologies in need of skilled graduates.
Entry Requirements

To enrol in the Professional Master of Computer Science, you will need to have completed a bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) with a background in a computer sciences subject (eg, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering), with either a B Grade Point Average in your 300-level courses or experience working in the field.

Recommended preparation

The BEnvSci(Hons) is open to anyone with entry to the University.

While no particular background is required, secondary school subjects such as biology, chemistry, geography, and sustainability are good preparation. Most important is a passion for the environment and our role as kaitiaki protectors of our natural world.

Bachelor

Main Campus
Data is used by organisations of all sizes to make better decisions. In this degree, you will learn how to analyse and interpret data to inform decision-making and forecast trends. With big data comes big responsibility, and you will learn the importance of data security, ethics, and strategy.

Recommended preparation

The Bachelor of Data Science is open to anyone with entry to the University.

A background in secondary school subjects such as maths, statistics, computing, and IT will be especially useful. UC offers introductory courses if you have little or no background in these areas.

To enrol in the Diploma in Advancing University Studies, you will need to have previously completed a university-level certificate or diploma programme (or equivalent) of at least 2 years full-time study.

Masters (Coursework)

Main Campus
The Master of Arts (Thesis) (MA(Thesis) is composed of a substantial body of original research in a wide variety of Arts subjects. It provides the opportunity to contribute to new knowledge in the field and build on academic skills.
Entry Requirements

You will need to have qualified for a Bachelor of Arts with Honours degree (or other qualifications of an equivalent standard) within one of the Arts subjects offered in the MA(Thesis).

With approval, you may be able to complete the MA(Thesis) in a different subject from your BA(Hons) qualification.

One or more courses or research may require vaccination

The government has announced new vaccination requirements for the health and education sectors. At UC, our programmes are strongly connected to our communities of practice. For many of our programmes, you will not be able to complete research or practice-oriented courses if you are not vaccinated. This is due to research/practice taking place in health centres and schools/kura where all employees and volunteers are required to be vaccinated.

For enrolment in the Child and Family Psychology major, you will be required to be vaccinated in line with the NZ Government regulations, and supply evidence of your vaccination status.

Graduate Diploma

The Graduate Diploma in Maori and Language Pedagogies: Aumiri Pounamu (GradDipMLP) provides provisionally certified and practising kaiako teachers with the confidence to be educators of te ao Maori.
Entry Requirements

The GradDipMLP is open to those who are provisionally certified as teachers, those that hold a subject to confirmation practising certificate, and full practising teachers.

You will need to have completed an Aotearoa New Zealand teacher education degree (or other qualifications of an equivalent standard) to enrol in this programme.

Graduate Diploma

A significant number of people experience issues with mental health, addictions, and harmful behaviour during their lifetime.
Entry Requirements

Current work in a clinical health-related field is required to enrol. You will need to have access to CBT supervision for the field placements in this programme.

You will also need to have previously completed a bachelor's degree in Psychology or a related area, with a B- Grade Point Average in your 300-level courses.

If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements.

Applicants with knowledge and current work experience in the areas of technology and/or te reo Maori may be eligible to apply for the Secondary Education endorsement without a bachelor's degree. There is a specific application process to assess eligibility.

Those entering the Secondary Education endorsement will need a body of knowledge from their previous studies in a subject relevant to the secondary school curriculum eg, te reo Maori, English, mathematics, chemistry, history, etc.
