About this course

The Graduate Diploma in Maori and Language Pedagogies: Aumiri Pounamu (GradDipMLP) provides provisionally certified and practising kaiako teachers with the confidence to be educators of te ao Maori.

Our programme will help guide you to embed Maori knowledge and culture into your teaching at early, primary, and secondary schools. This includes te reo, tikanga Maori traditional culture, Aotearoa New Zealand history, and matauranga Maori worldviews, such as sustainability and our role as kaitiaki protectors of the land.

This is an ideal programme for you to help support Aotearoa New Zealand's commitment to teaching our tamariki the values, culture, and history of our nation.

Entry requirements

The GradDipMLP is open to those who are provisionally certified as teachers, those that hold a subject to confirmation practising certificate, and full practising teachers.

You will need to have completed an Aotearoa New Zealand teacher education degree (or other qualifications of an equivalent standard) to enrol in this programme.

For the full entry requirements, see the Regulations for the Graduate Diploma in Maori Language and Pedagogies: Aumiri Pounamu or use the admission requirements checker.

How to apply

You can apply online at myUC. Find out more about how to apply for graduate and postgraduate qualifications.

There will also be a hui with the Programme Coordinator as part of your application to assess your current level of te reo competency and ascertain the support you will need during study.

For information on the enrolment process, please see Te Kura Whakangungu Kaiako Aumiri Pounamu | School of Teacher Education website.

Career pathways

The Diploma will improve your teaching capabilities by strengthening your worldviews, language ability, and cultural awareness. You will be able to bring this sense of kotahitanga unity to your teaching style and create a whanau community atmosphere within your classroom.

Our government has announced initiatives to teach Aotearoa New Zealand history in schools by 2022, and to integrate te reo Maori studies by 2025. Graduates of this Certificate will be well prepared to meet this need, and will find themselves highly employable as a result.

An ability to teach both to and of indigenous cultures will also prepare you for careers internationally in countries looking to further embrace their own cultural histories.
