    Entry Requirements

    Entry to the Graduate Diploma requires a bachelor's degree, which does not need to be in the same area of study. If you gained your qualification overseas, this will need to be assessed to ensure it is of an equivalent standard.

    Acceptance for the programme will depend on the standard and relevance of your previous studies.

    The Bachelor of Commerce with Honours is for high-achieving students with a relevant bachelor's degree. A choice of seven subjects is available.

    Entry Requirements

    You must have qualified for a bachelor's degree, and satisfied the prerequisites for your major subject. Prerequisites vary between departments, but normally good grades in 300-level courses in the subject is required.

    Master of Engineering Studies

    Masters (Coursework)

    The Master of Engineering Studies caters for professional engineers seeking advanced technical training, and is a taught-coursework master's degree with no thesis or research requirement.

    Entry Requirements

    You will need to have completed one of the following:

    • Bachelor of Engineering with Honours with First or Second Class Honours
    • Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering with a GPA of 5 or more
    • Bachelor of Science with Honours with First or Second Class Honours in appropriate subjects.

    Relevance and standard of previous study is the main criteria for approval.

    You must have completed both the academic and non-academic requirements of your prerequisite degree. This includes practical work days, work reports, a workshop training course, and a first aid certificate. The programme of study must be approved.

    If English is your additional subject, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements.

    Entry Requirements

    Recommended preparation

    Anyone with entry to the University can study a BCom from 100-level without previous study in the area. However, it is useful to have studied accounting, economics, business studies, and mathematics (especially statistics) at secondary school.

    If you have achieved top results in accounting and/or economics at secondary school you may be eligible for direct entry to some 200-level courses.

    A good standard of spoken and written English is important.

    While no particular background is required, secondary school subjects such as biology, chemistry, geography, and sustainability are good preparation. Most important is a passion for the environment and our role as kaitiaki protectors of our natural world.

    Applications for July (23B3) close 5 July 2023. The Certificate in University Preparation (CUP) is designed to prepare Aotearoa New Zealand citizens, or holders of a Residents Class Visa of New Zealand or Australia, for university study.

    Entry Requirements

    We accept students into the CUP programme based on:

    • a Personal Statement.

      (In your application you will be asked to include a small statement about yourself (max. 250 words). This is to help provide some information for the Transitions Team prior to the interview. Some things you could include are your background, work experience, achievements, current interests, and/or future plans).

    • an interview with a Student Advisor.
    • a previous academic record.

    All students have an interview before they start to help design an appropriate pathway around their future ambitions and current needs.

    Our intention is for students to succeed in tertiary study, and some background knowledge is required for certain degree pathways.

    • A diagnostic maths test may be required for our engineering and science pathways.
    • An English Language test may be required if your previous education is in another language.

    We have a partnership with Hagley College to deliver an extended pathway into degree study, if required.

    Doctor of Musical Arts

    Doctorate (PhD)

    The DMA is aimed at those wishing to undertake advanced research in music composition or performance. It involves scholarly research, in the form of a supervised research thesis, and performance practice (such as a public music performance or the presentation of compositions).

    Entry Requirements

    The DMA requires a Master of Music with Distinction or Merit, or a Bachelor of Music with Honours with First or Second Class Honours (Division I).

    UC's Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching (PGCertCT) is designed for health professionals who are responsible for supervising, coaching, and supporting learning in clinical learning environments in a range healthcare settings.

    Entry Requirements

    To enrol in the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching, you must have one of the following:

    • a degree from an Aotearoa New Zealand university which is of relevance to clinical teaching and the proposed course of study; or
    • an appropriate health or allied professional qualification requiring at least three years full-time tertiary study at an appropriate level; or
    • qualifications and experience that accord with membership of an approved health professional association, or be registered to practice within a health environment.

    One or more courses or research may require vaccination

    The government has announced new vaccination requirements for the health and education sectors. At UC, our programmes are strongly connected to our communities of practice. For many of our programmes, you will not be able to complete research or practice-oriented courses if you are not vaccinated. This is due to research/practice taking place in health centres and schools/kura where all employees and volunteers are required to be vaccinated.

    For these courses you will be required to be vaccinated in line with the NZ Government regulations, and supply evidence of your vaccination status.

    The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (PGDipTchgLn) combines research-informed knowledge and critical inquiry with practice-based experiences in schools to prepare you for a career in teaching.

    Entry Requirements

    Applicants for the PGDipTchgLn programme will need an Aotearoa New Zealand bachelor's degree with a B Grade Point Average in their 300-level courses (or other qualifications of an equivalent standard). Those entering the Secondary Education endorsement will need previous studies in a subject relevant to the Aotearoa New Zealand secondary school curriculum eg, te reo Maori, English, biological sciences, mathematics, history, physical education, etc.

    You will be approved for entry on the recommendation of a Selection Committee. Selection for entry is based on:

    • academic ability, involvement and interest in working with children and young people, community involvement, communication skills, and other personal qualities as outlined in the Guide to Applying
    • a police check, referees' reports, and an interview
    • a short literacy and numeracy test.

    How to apply

    Considering the limited spaces available in the programme each year, entry into the programme is competitive. You will need to complete the application form on the Gateway Antarctica website by 19 September. You will also need to provide certified copies of your academic transcripts with your application. Two letters of reference have to be sent directly to Gateway Antarctica from your referees that you nominate as part of your application.

    A decision on whether your application has been successful will be made in early September.

    This 180-point Master's degree is an advanced programme offering specialised courses in linguistic analysis and a significant research component. Master of Linguistics (MLing) students will analyse the relationship between a language and its 'social life'.

    Entry Requirements

    Applicants for this degree need to have either:

    • a bachelor's degree with a major in Linguistics, with at least a B+ Grade Point Average in 60 points in Linguistics at 300-level; or
    • any bachelor's degree, and a Graduate Diploma in Arts in Linguistics, with at least a B+ Grade Point Average in 60 points in Linguistics at 300-level; or
    • a bachelor's degree with a major in Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Computer Science, a language, or a different major approved by the Head of Department of Linguistics, with at least a B+ Grade Point Average in 60 points of 300-level courses in the majoring subject, and achieved at least a B+ in LING400 English Structures (a distance-learning course which runs over the summer); or
    • other approved qualifications of an equivalent standard.

    In addition, all students must be approved to enrol.
