About this course

Designed for tertiary teachers, this professional qualification examines academic practices across disciplines that are central to the role of teaching in a modern tertiary institution. The programme uses processes of shared inquiry, reflection, and collaborative learning to explore participants' teaching practices and their students' understandings of learning.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching (PGCertTertTchg) equips you with the ability to reflect on current research on teaching and learning, develop and justify a range of teaching approaches and assessment practices, and evaluate and advance your own teaching practices. The programme covers fundamentals such as frameworks or models of learning, constructive alignment of assessment, rethinking learning design of courses, and adopting a scholarly/research approach to evaluating your practice.

Assessment is grounded in your own practice so you can gain maximum benefit from the coursework you do within this programme. The PGCertTertTchg provides skills and knowledge to help jump start an academic career by creating a pathway towards such achievements as a Teaching Award and promotion.

The programme seeks to create a community of practice amongst participants. Given the many pressures facing academics, more flexible modes of participation have been developed to enable colleagues to undertake discrete topics covered in the courses as separate components. In addition, increased flexible learning opportunities modes of participation and engagement that are less time dependant are available.
