Entry Requirements

To be eligible you must hold a current electrical workers licence, restricted licence is not acceptable.

* Please note: If you are not working within an electrical contracting company, a person other than an electrical contractor may hold the business aspect of the licence. In this case, the electrical work will only be completed, under that aspect of the licence, by an electrician employed by that company and nominated by that same employer as the Nominees/In-house Licence holder.

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to safely operate a commercial vessel of less than 24 metres in length within offshore limits. You will learn skills in shipboard safety, navigation, ship knowledge and vessel operations..

  • Students must be at least 16 years of age to commence this course
  • Prospective students should preferably hold a Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal)
  • Students should be currently working in an appropriate role in industry

In addition to successful completion of Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal), the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requires students to successfully complete the following to be issued with a new certificate of competency:

  • Complete an AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA)

Take command of your maritime career, become a master of the seas and rise to the top as the ship's most responsible officer.. This course will allow you to work in international waters as a: Master, Chief mate or Watchkeeper deck officer on ships of any gross tonnage in any operating area.

Prospective students should hold one of the following:

  • A Diploma of Maritime Operations (Watchkeeper Deck) or
  • A Diploma of Maritime Operations (Master less than 500 GT) or
  • A Master less than 80 metres near coastal.

In addition to successful completion of Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Master Unlimited), the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requires students to successfully complete each of the following to be issued with a new certificate of competency:

  • Meet medical test requirements
  • Completed qualifying sea service as an officer in charge of a navigational watch in accordance with AMSA requirements, see link below.
  • Pass a final assessment at an AMSA office

Entrance requirements for apprenticeships

You must be employed in a training contract by an appropriate organisation to study an apprenticeship or traineeship.

An apprenticeship involves full time work with an employer who provides an opportunity to learn all aspects of a trade. This is a structured program for a fixed period of time and while you learn on the job, you also attend off the job training at SM TAFE.

Entrance requirements for traineeships

You must be employed in a training contract by an appropriate organisation to study an apprenticeship or traineeship.

In a traineeship you also gain hands-on skills and work experience, and improve your employment prospects, while earning a wage. On successful completion you will gain a nationally recognised qualification which can lead to rewarding career options. The difference between a traineeship and an apprenticeship is that a traineeship can be either a full time or part time employment based training arrangement, usually for a nominal duration of 12 months or more, generally in a non-trade related area.
