Domestic Entry Requirements

Tertiary: Successful completion of an AQF 7 Bachelor degree or equivalent

Where standard entry is not able to be met the following criteria for alternative entry will be considered by the Course Coordinator:

• At least 3 years relevant work experience (Specific occupations, workplace settings and industries are more relevant for specific courses and will receive greater weighting in consideration) demonstrating the relevance of the course;
• A record of high achievement in any other qualifications or uncompleted undergraduate qualifications such as Distinction average.

International Entry Requirements

Admission to most postgraduate coursework courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects, and meet English language requirements to be eligible for an offer.

Tertiary: Successful completion of an AQF7 Bachelor degree or equivalent in a health related field such as health sciences, medicine, nursing, dentistry, allied health, psychology, social sciences, environmental health and health services management.

English Language: IELTS 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0)

Please note: The closing time and date for the receipt of applications for admission to the Master of Professional Psychology in 2024 is 11.59pm on 30 September 2023 (AEDT). Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.

The minimum academic requirement for entry to the course is successful completion of a four year APAC-Accredited sequence in psychology (AQF Level 8) within the last 10 years, together with eligibility for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia as a provisional psychologist.

To be eligible for entry to the course applicants must have attained either a 2B Honours degree or a Distinction minimum average across their psychology subjects in years 3 and 4 of their APAC accredited undergraduate training.

Those applicants who have not completed a four year APAC-accredited sequence in psychology must have their qualifications assessed by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), and provide the assessment report from the Australian Psychological Society with their application. For information on how to do this and the fees associated with this service refer to the APS. The assessment report must state that the applicant's qualifications are comparable to a four year APAC-accredited sequence in psychology.

All applicants must satisfy the School of Psychological Sciences that they are suitable candidates for professional training in psychology. Selection will be based on referee reports, academic merit, relevant experience, and a structured interview by a selection panel. Short-listed applicants will be required to attend an interview in November.

Professional Experience Placement Requirements

SAFETY IN PRACTICE COMPLIANCE

All students enrolling in College of Health and Medicine programs which include a professional experience placement component, laboratory and/or field activity are required to establish and maintain their capacity to practice safely via Safety in Practice Requirements compliance documentation.

The College, in accordance with Safety in Practice Compliance and Risk Assessment Procedure (PDF 659.0KB), assesses student compliance with Safety in Practice Requirements, which include:

• national criminal history;
• working with children registration;
• medical, physical and psychological capacity to safely undertake the College of Health and Medicine Mandatory Functional Requirements; and
• infectious disease and immunisation status.

National criminal history and medical, physical and psychological disclosures can inhibit student eligibility to participate in courses. Students must submit the Safety in Practice Requirements compliance documentation to enable risk assessment to be completed before:

• semester one census date annually; or
• in case of late enrolment, prior to beginning study.

The exceptions are the Working with Children Registration and Immunisation Record Card check, which must be completed 4 weeks prior to first PEP.

The entrance requirements for the Psychology Honours Program include a Bachelor's Degree (BA, BSc, BPsychSc, BBehavSc or equivalent) with a three-year sequence in Psychology accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council, and a good academic record. Applicants are expected to have a substantial background in psychology, including statistical methods. Applicants who have completed their undergraduate studies at the University of Tasmania will have completed the twelve APAC accredited psychology units (four each at 100, 200 and 300 level).

Applicants should note that meeting minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee entry to the Psychology Honours Program as each year the number of applicants greatly exceeds the number of places. Places are limited by the availability of research facilities and staff resources. A competitive entry process is followed based on academic merit. Candidates would normally be expected to obtain at least a Distinction average in the 200 and 300 level units in the Psychology major.

Admission to Honours courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects and the English language requirements to be eligible for an offer. Admission is conditional on research project and supervisor availability.

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.

Course Specific Requirements
The entrance requirements for the Psychology Honours Program include a Bachelor's Degree (BA, BSc, BPsychSc, BBehavSc or equivalent) with a three-year sequence in Psychology accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council, and a good academic record. Applicants are expected to have a substantial background in psychology, including statistical methods. Applicants from international institutions will need to demonstrate they have completed equivalent units by providing an Australian Psychological Society (APS) assessment of the qualification to confirm equivalence with a 3-year APAC-accredited program:

Domestic Applicants who have recently completed secondary education

Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available.

Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your individual subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.

Domestic applicants with higher education study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have:

• Partially completed an undergraduate course at Diploma level or higher (or equivalent). Applicants must have completed at least two units of study (equivalent to 25 UTAS credit points at 100-level or higher). If an applicant has failed any units the application may be subject to further review before an offer is made; or
• Completed the UTAS University Preparation Program (or an equivalent qualification offered by an Australian University).

Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed a Certificate IV (or equivalent) in any discipline.

Domestic applicants with work and life experience

Applicants without senior secondary, tertiary or VET / TAFE study can complete a personal competency statement.

Applicants may be eligible for an offer if they have relevant work and / or life experiences which demonstrate a capacity to succeed in this course.

Special consideration

If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors, including economic hardship, serious medical condition or disability.

We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course. Special consideration is not available for international applicants.

Non-Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT)

All applicants are required to provide a non-academic personal statement which is used to assist in the selection of students into all Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses at the University of Tasmania.

This statement is submitted through the Non-Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT) after you have completed your application and is used in conjunction with your ATAR score (or equivalent alternative entry.) All applicants must satisfactorily complete the NACAT before they will be provided with an offer into the course.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teaching Education.

Commencing students must attempt the LANTITE in their first year of study and are required to successfully complete the LANTITE prior to undertaking their final Professional Experience Placement.

Progression to Master of Teaching

To progress into the Master of Teaching component of the course you must attain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5 or above (Credit average) in the first 100 credit points of undergraduate study.

If you do not meet this GPA requirement you will be transferred into the Bachelor of Arts with full credit. On completion of the Bachelor of Arts you may apply to return and complete the Master of Teaching.
