    • University Entrance Literacy: 8 credits at Level 2 or above in English or Maori (4 in Reading, 4 in Writing); or
    • Evidence of English language proficiency as outlined in the NZQA Rules on the Unitec English Language Requirements for International Students Web-page.

    • submit a satisfactory portfolio of work to show you are at the standard necessary to undertake work up to 300-level and beyond

    • have been admitted to the qualification on the basis of equivalent relevant professional experience.

    To ensure this qualification is right for you, you will be required to submit a short personal statement detailing why you wish to study this qualification and your relevant industry experience (if any).

    If you already have an undergraduate degree, you are strongly advised to consider doing the Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism.

    Academic requirements:

    For this programme, you will need the following:

    1. A minimum of 4 years' secondary education;
    2. Be 16 years old by the time the programme starts;
    3. A minimum total of 40 NCEA credits at level 2 in four subjects, including:
      • A minimum of 12 English credits at level 1 or higher;
      • University Entrance numeracy (or equivalent);
    4. If you haven't met the above NCEA requirements, you'll need one of the following:
      • A relevant qualification at Level 3 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework or equivalent qualifications (e.g. International Baccalaureate or Cambridge), or;
      • The New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3);
      • After you have submitted your application to study at Unitec, you may be asked to attend a skills review session to assess your literacy and numeracy levels. This helps us to enrol you in the best programme and courses for your career pathway.
    English requirements for international students:

    If English is not your first language, you will need one of the following:

    • Academic IELTS level 5.5 with no band lower than 5, or;
    • The New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 (Applied).

    The Master of Arts (MA) degree consists of taught coursework, which may include internship opportunities, and independent research in a wide variety of Arts subjects.

    Entry Requirements

    You will need to have qualified for an Aotearoa New Zealand bachelor's degree (or other qualifications of an equivalent standard).

    You must also satisfy the prerequisites for a major subject. Prerequisites vary between departments, but normally good grades in 300-level courses in the subject is required.

    If you do not meet the prerequisites in your chosen subject, you may be able to complete a qualifying course, or substitute relevant professional practice or other work experience that satisfies your ability to pursue postgraduate-level studies in that subject.

    If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements.
