    Masters (Coursework)

    The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) provides a development opportunity for students who have an interest in establishing themselves as professional artists or scholars, or career designers, filmmakers, or photographers.

    • a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours, or an equivalent degree with good grades in relevant subjects; or
    • significant professional practice or teaching experience.

    Entry Requirements

    To enrol in the MHealSc, you must have completed either a relevant bachelor's degree, an appropriate health professional qualification, or the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (or equivalent) with at least a B Grade Point Average.

    Students with a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (or equivalent) can complete Part II only (a full year of research - 120 points - in a pre-approved topic is recommended, although other options may be available).

    One or more courses or research may require vaccination

    The government has announced new vaccination requirements for the health and education sectors. At UC, our programmes are strongly connected to our communities of practice. For many of our programmes, you will not be able to complete research or practice-oriented courses if you are not vaccinated. This is due to research/practice taking place in health centres and schools/kura where all employees and volunteers are required to be vaccinated.

    For these courses you will be required to be vaccinated in line with the NZ Government regulations, and supply evidence of your vaccination status.

    Enrolment into the Health Behaviour Change and Nursing endorsements will require a vaccine.

    The Postgraduate Diploma in Education is designed to provide opportunities to improve professional practice and examine critically significant issues in education. The PGDipEd is also available with an endorsement in one of seven areas.

    Entry Requirements

    You must be approved for enrolment to the PGDipEd with one of the following:

    • any appropriate bachelor's degree from Aotearoa New Zealand with a major in Education, Psychology, or a related subject; or
    • any bachelor's degree from Aotearoa, and either;
      • successfully completed a recognised teacher training course of not less than one year at an Aotearoa New Zealand college of education or university; or
      • acquired experience as a teacher, educator, or counsellor in a recognised workplace or community setting; or
      • completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Education; or
    • other qualifications of an equivalent standard.

    The relevance and standard of undergraduate studies, and any subsequent professional work experience, are the main criteria of approval. You will normally be expected to have at least a B Grade Point Average in your 300-level courses.

    Note:
    To be admitted to the Diploma endorsed in Hoaka Pounamu: Te Reo Maori Bilingual and Immersion Teaching, you must meet a minimum Maori language proficiency level assessed by an interview.

    To be admitted to the Diploma endorsed in Leadership, you must have an appropriate degree, a minimum one-year teacher training course, and have normally completed five year's teaching service, and have a position with leadership responsibility.

    The Postgraduate Certificate in Geospatial Science and Technology (PGCertGST) programme equips students with a foundational knowledge of geospatial science and technology at postgraduate level. It can be a stepping-stone to a professional master's degree or a one year professional qualification.

    The PGCertGST requires a bachelor's degree with at least a B Grade Point Average in your 300-level courses in an area relevant to geospatial analysis, or equivalent, or three years of professional experience in a related industry.

    Master of Engineering Management (MEM) graduates apply integrated engineering and business knowledge in a technical environment.

    Entry Requirements

    You must have either a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours, a Bachelor of Science with Honours, or other qualifications of an equivalent standard, and have a GPA of at least 4 in your 300-level and higher courses. You can also apply for admission to the MEM based on previous studies and work experience, with approval.

    You will need to have completed both the academic and non-academic requirements of your previous degree. This may include practical work days, work reports, a workshop training course, and a first aid certificate.

    If English is your additional language, you are also required to provide evidence of your English language ability with an IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0, with no individual score below 6.5; or other acceptable evidence.

    Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Management pathway

    You may choose to first enrol in the Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Management and later progress into the full MEM programme. The Diploma includes most of the compulsory courses as the MEM, and you will attend the same classes as MEM students.

    Graduate Diploma

    The Graduate Diploma in Arts offers those who hold a bachelor's degree in a major in an unrelated area the opportunity to study arts in-depth, choosing from over 30 subjects.

    Entry to the Graduate Diploma requires a bachelor's degree, which does not need to be in the same area of study. If you gained your qualification overseas, this will need to be assessed to ensure it is of an equivalent standard.

    Entry Requirements

    To apply for admission to the Intermediate Year (first year) of the BFA, you need to have met University Entrance requirements, and achieved NCEA Level 3 Visual Arts in one or more subjects (or the equivalent in other secondary school qualifications).

    It is also recommended that you have at least 14 credits in each of two other NCEA Level 3 subjects (or equivalent) that are not practical art subjects.

    All applicants also need to submit an application form, a letter of introduction, and a portfolio of work.

    How to apply

    Entry to the first year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts is limited. Send your application materials to the School of Fine Arts Reception by 15 November:

    • the Application for Fine Arts Intermediate course form
    • a letter of introduction
    • a portfolio of work, including a written statement.

    You are encouraged to apply as early as possible, and to visit Te Kura Kowaiwai | Ilam School of Fine Arts before making your application. You should expect to be advised of acceptance by the end of November.

    Portfolio of work

    Your application should include a portfolio of recently completed art and/or design work.

    The portfolio must include 12 examples of work from NCEA (or equivalent) practical arts subjects. The format should be in colour and can be submitted in an A4 or A3 folder or as a single file PDF either on a USB drive, attached to an email, or shared via a reputable file sharing service (eg, weTransfer or Dropbox).

    This is your opportunity to demonstrate:

    • your competency and ability in artmaking
      - so please make sure you include your best work. We also need to see aspects of your methodology; examples of preliminary sketches are important here.
    • your best possible presentation of work
      . There are a number of formatting requirements for the supply of your work portfolio - please see the application form for details.
    • your ability to express your thinking in a written statement.
      This is your chance to demonstrate a critical understanding of how the work operates, the decisions you made, and what you are trying to address through your work.

    • A bachelor's degree with at least 60 points in 300-level language courses at a B+ grade average, or equivalent level, from either Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, or Te Reo Maori
    • Any bachelor's degree with relevant professional or other work experience in one of the approved languages above, or another language which may be available on application
    • A Postgraduate Certificate in Translation and Interpreting with a B grade average or better
    • Extensive practical, professional, or academic experience that demonstrates your ability to complete postgraduate studies, and demonstrated equivalent competence in an appropriate language.

    The Postgraduate Certificate in Palliative Care develops health practitioners' skills in palliative care and introduces palliative care as a research field.

    Entry Requirements

    To enrol in the Postgraduate Certificate in Palliative Care you must have one of the following:

    • qualified for a degree in a New Zealand Tertiary Educational Organisation which is of relevance to the health sciences and the proposed course of study; or
    • an appropriate health or allied professional qualification requiring at least three years equivalent full-time tertiary study at an appropriate level, or successfully completed a qualifying course prescribed by the Joint Board of Studies: Health; and
    • presented evidence of ability for advanced level academic study; or
    • other qualifications of an equivalent standard.

    You must also have qualifications and experience that accord with membership of an approved health professional association, or be registered to practice within a health environment and have access to relevant clinical placement.

    Entry Requirements

    The Master of Maori and Indigenous Leadership (MMIL) is open to:

    • graduates of any bachelor's degree with at least a B Grade Point Average in 60 points at 300-level, and who have at least three years professional experience in the Maori sector; or
    • applicants without an undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification), but have qualified for the Postgraduate Certificate in Maori and Indigenous Leadership.

    How to apply

    Expressions of interest are welcome throughout the year by contacting the MIL Programme Director. The programme is held in various rohe across Aotearoa New Zealand each year as we believe it is important to take the programme into our communities.

    Enrolments open 1 October 2022 and close 30 November for the 2023 intake. You will need to enrol via MyUC and upload the following documents:

    • Personal Statement: a 1,500-2,000 word statement that describes your personal experience with and commitment to iwi self-determination, as well as your study goals and expectations from this programme. Please include a scope that describes a project or initiative that you want you pursue during your MIL journey that you believe makes a significant contribution to our community, and how it contributes to Tino Rangatiratanga.
    • Curriculum Vitae: this should include any academic history, work history, and relevant experience. This is to establish you are or have been working in a role that contributes to Maori interests and aspirations.
    • If you also have an undergraduate degree, please upload a scan of your transcript when you enrol. Please note if you should be offered a place on the programme, we will need to sight the original.

    We will notify you of the outcome of your application by 16 December 2022.

    International students with English as a second language must provide evidence of IELTS (Academic) 7.0, with no score lower than 6.5, before admission to the First Professional Year (second year of study).

    One or more courses or research may require vaccination

    The final vaccination mandate ended at 11:59 pm on Monday 26 September 2022 which applied to health and disability workers. Some employers/placement sites may still require workers to be vaccinated due to health and safety. As such, some clinical placements may be restricted for those students who are not fully vaccinated.

    Recommended background

    The Intermediate Year (first year) is open to anyone, however a background in science from secondary school is recommended.

    Entry into the Professional Years

    The first year is followed by the Professional Years. Entry into the Professional Years is limited and is based on completion of the Intermediate Year, academic merit, an application form, a statement of interest, two letters of recommendation, and performance in an interview with a programme representative or representatives. Relevant work or volunteer experience may also be considered.

    Applications for entry for the First Professional Year close on 1 October of the preceding year, although late enrolments will be considered if places are still available. Application forms are required and intending applicants should contact the BSLP(Hons) Programme Coordinator at least a month before the closing date.

    If you are unsuccessful in gaining a place in the First Professional Year, your completed courses can usually be credited to a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Health Sciences, or Bachelor of Arts.
