Polytechnic University of the Philippines

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) is the first and only chartered and autonomous university funded by a city government. It was created by the Congress of the Philippines by virtue of Republic Act No. 4196 or “An Act Authorizing the City of Manila to Establish and Operate the University of City of Manila” on June 19, 1965.

The university first opened its gates on July 17, 1967 to 556 first-year students at its campus in the historic Intramuros district, which served as the seat of power during the Spanish occupation. Currently, about 10,000 graduate and post-graduate students grace its halls to receive PLM’s quality education.

PLM is the first local government-funded tertiary institution that offered tuition-free education. PLM also carries the distinction of being the first tertiary institution to have a Filipino official name, which is why people use “Pamantasan” to refer to PLM. The word pamantasan was derived from the Filipino term “pantas” or wise person.

The university stands on historic grounds. On its site once stood the Universidad de San Ignacio (1590-1798), Universidad Maximo de San Ignacio, Colegio de San Jose, and Ateneo de Municipal de Manila (1865-1901).

PLM is a premiere university that has consistently garnered a 100% passing rate in licensure exams. Since 1967, it has produced competent and socially responsible graduates who have contributed to nation-building.

Gold Coast

The Southern Cross University Gold Coast campus is located at Coolangatta, just 400 meters from North Kirra Beach, and adjacent to the Gold Coast Airport. Many vantage points offer stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.&nbsp;

The campus is spread across three contemporary buildings that house innovative learning spaces, health sciences laboratories, computer labs, student lounges, the University’s Digital Enterprise Lab and an on-campus Health Clinic. 

Lismore

Lismore was the first Southern Cross campus, located in the heart of the Northern Rivers. Set on acres of lush rainforest, Lismore campus is a creative hub within easy reach of both national parks and the ocean.

It is also home to state-of-the-art engineering and environmental science facilities, specialist health labs and simulated hospital wards, a Learning Centre and library complex, heated pool and gym, and an on-campus Health Clinic. Koalas and native wildlife are a common sight on campus.&nbsp;

Coffs Harbour

The University is part of an education precinct in Coffs Harbour, co-located with TAFE NSW and the Coffs Harbour Innovation Hub.

A multi-million dollar Health Sciences Building opened on campus in 2019, with state-of-the-art teaching facilities for our health science students. The campus includes a fitness centre, extensive landscaped grounds and close proximity to beaches and the growing regional centre of Coffs Harbour. 

The University’s National Marine Science Centre is located in nearby Charlesworth Bay.

<h3>Upskill with a 12-week short course</h3>

Southern Cross University has announced a suite of short courses for Australians looking to upskill and retrain from mid-2020.

The new online courses are backed by the Federal Government's COVID-19 relief package and are designed to enable people to build skills in areas such as health, IT, engineering, science, education and agriculture for a fraction of the usual cost of study – with HECS-HELP available to all Australian citizens.

<h3>Campuses</h3>

Gold Coast 
The Southern Cross University Gold Coast campus is located at Coolangatta, just 400 meters from North Kirra Beach, and adjacent to the Gold Coast Airport. Many vantage points offer stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

The campus is spread across three contemporary buildings that house innovative learning spaces, health sciences laboratories, computer labs, student lounges, the University's Digital Enterprise Lab and an on-campus Health Clinic.

Lismore 
Lismore was the first Southern Cross campus, located in the heart of the Northern Rivers. Set on acres of lush rainforest, Lismore campus is a creative hub within easy reach of both national parks and the ocean.

It is also home to state-of-the-art engineering and environmental science facilities, specialist health labs and simulated hospital wards, a Learning Centre and library complex, heated pool and gym, and an on-campus Health Clinic. Koalas and native wildlife are a common sight on campus.

Coffs Harbour 
The University is part of an education precinct in Coffs Harbour, co-located with TAFE NSW and the Coffs Harbour Innovation Hub.

A multi-million dollar Health Sciences Building opened on campus in 2019, with state-of-the-art teaching facilities for our health science students. The campus includes a fitness centre, extensive landscaped grounds and close proximity to beaches and the growing regional centre of Coffs Harbour.

The University's National Marine Science Centre is located in nearby Charlesworth Bay.

<h2>THE SAS STORY</h2>

Back in the mid-1960s – long before university-industry incubators or big data were all the rage – the US Department of Agriculture wanted to feed the vast amounts of data it possessed into one of the computerised statistics programs cutting-edge universities were starting to develop.

A consortium of universities headed up North Carolina State University got the gig. They did such a bang-up job that soon other government departments as well as private companies, particularly in data-rich industries such as banking, insurance and pharmaceuticals, were queuing up for the useful insights the university statisticians – or, more precisely, their computer programs – could provide.

Jim Goodnight, Jim Barr, Jane Helwig and John Sall were four North Carolina State University academics who’d played a crucial role in developing the software, known as Statistical Analysis System (SAS). In 1976, they formed a private company, SAS Institute Inc, “devoted to the maintenance and further development of SAS”. Dr Goodnight took the CEO role and continues to lead the company today.&nbsp;

With what’s now known as the digital age in its infancy, the conditions were ripe for SAS to grow phenomenally fast. That’s essentially what it has done ever since.

SAS now has four decades of commercial experience helping its clients turn data into knowledge; feeding figures into its acclaimed business analytics software to provide organisations with a “fresh perspective” on their activities. One that allows them to identify what does and doesn’t work and discern possible business opportunities.

Still headquartered in a smallish North Carolina town, the company is now a tech-industry giant with customers in 149 countries. Its “innovative analytics, business intelligence and data management software and services… [help] customers at more than 80,000 sites make better decisions faster”.

<h2>THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS</h2>

Early Career Programs

Given the incredible conditions it offers staff, SAS has no shortage of job applicants. To be in the running, you’ll probably need a background in STEM, though those from disciplines such as accounting and business will also be considered. You’ll definitely need to be passionate, tenacious and resourceful and possess solid communication skills. Ideally, you’ll also be tech and data-savvy and have some experience using programming languages and modelling tools, as well as analysing data.

SAS Australia offers 3 entry-level programs which will enable you to join SAS and pursue a career in either Customer Advisory, Sales or Professional Services. They are the SAS Customer Advisory Academy, the SAS Sales Academy and the SAS Technical Enablement Academy.

Each Academy starts with an intensive training program based in the SAS head office in North Carolina, America. The academy training covers extensive and in-depth technical knowledge of SAS Software and Solutions as well as critical business skills such as advising organisations how to solving data challenges or how to manage a territory of accounts and engaging with technical and business executives. On completion, you will return to the team in SAS Australia and have structured mentoring in your role to best enable your future success.

Work Placement Programs

Remuneration

Possibly because it was launched and has continued to be run by idealistic academics rather than hard-nosed businesspeople, SAS is world-renowned for its extensive and lavish benefits. (Google modelled itself on SAS when creating its famous menu of workplace perks.)
