The Melbourne Model

Degrees at the University of Melbourne work differently to those at most other Australian universities. Similar to those offered by many top institutions in Europe and the United States, students begin with a more general undergraduate degree, and then choose to specialise at graduate level. <h4>Applying for postgraduate study</h4>

Graduate programs normally require the satisfactory completion of an undergraduate degree either from the University of Melbourne, a university in another country or another Australian institution. Applicants must also meet the English language requirements of the University to be eligible to be offered a place.

<h4>How to apply</h4>

&nbsp;All students applying for a course at the University of Melbourne must satisfy the entry requirements for that course. You may also be eligible for admission with credit depending on your previous studies and experience.

Victoria University achieved university status in 1991, but our preceding institutions date back to 1916. It is one of Australia’s few dual-sector universities.

As one of 39 public universities in Australia, graduates can be assured their qualification from VU is being awarded from a university operating in a world-class education system.

As well as about 5000 international students studying our courses in Australia, we have more than 9400 international students studying VU courses at overseas partner institutions, mainly in Asia.

Being a dual-sector university means that their students can easily pathway from vocational education to higher education - such as from a certificate or diploma course through to an undergraduate degree or even a postgraduate qualification by coursework or research.

<h4>Applying for postgraduate study</h4>

An application for a research degree that is not dependent upon a scholarship can be made at any time throughout the year.

Applicants for a research degree who would also like to apply for a main round graduate research scholarship are required to apply for a scholarship first.&nbsp; These are available for application each year in August to September for International students and September to October for Domestic Students and include government schemes APA and IPRS.

In addition to these scholarships there are a range of other options for funding your research degree available throughout the year.
