This course introduces the role and responsibilities of Teacher Aides, including concepts of teaching and learning, planning and adapting for learners, and building professional relationships. It explores how Teacher Aides can support learners' wellbeing and their specific learning, behavioural, and other needs. It also highlights the importance of inclusion, with a focus on how Teacher Aides can respect and acknowledge cultural and other forms of diversity in their work within New Zealand schools.
After completing this course, you will have further developed the understandings and skills that support your work as a Teacher Aide or Learning Support in New Zealand Schools. You will have explored a range of concepts and skills across the three strands of grades A and B of the New Zealand Teacher Aide Work Matrix.

We are also offering a pathway for staff currently working in a school who are interested in working towards gaining a teaching qualification. Students who are interested can begin study in the Bachelor of Teaching, Primary* part-time, via distance learning in the second half of 2023 (B Trimester) which provides a bridge to continuing with full-time study in 2024. A 15 point option paper can also be credited towards the Bachelor of Teaching, Primary degree** upon completion of all three modules of the Teacher Aide Course. Further information about the pathway into the Bachelor of Teaching, Primary* will be shared during the course.

**Note: Unfortunately at this time we aren't able to offer a pathway into an Initial Teacher Education Programme that is Secondary School specific, however you are able to use the 15 point paper credit towards another degree programme if you wish.
