About this course

The Diploma of Arts provides you with opportunities to interpret human culture and behaviour from different perspectives and periods. Your studies will explore today's big questions. You'll learn how to support the social and economic development of the human race and/or to be immersed in creativity, performance and innovation.

This course is designed to allow you to choose your path: it can be the first year of your Bachelor of Arts study, or you may enrol to pursue your passion and undertake one of the majors in the Bachelor of Arts, or if you decide you would like to extend your curiosity and try units from a number of disciplines.

The Diploma of Arts gives you the flexibility to choose from a wide range of subjects with over twenty named majors.

Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. In 2021, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer into this course was 87.10. The lowest ATAR to receive an offer may change from year to year based on the number of applications we receive

Applicants for the Theatre and Performance major who have not met the ATAR requirement may be asked to undertake an audition or interview in order to be admitted to the course.

To be eligible for an offer, you must have:

  • Completed a course at Diploma level or higher at any Australian higher education provider (or an equivalent overseas qualification); or
  • Completed at least one units of study (equivalent to 12.5 UTAS credit points) of a course at Diploma level (or an equivalent overseas qualification). If you have failed any units your application may be subject to further review before an offer is made; or
  • Completed the Diploma of University Studies; or
  • Competed the UTAS University Preparation Program, or an equivalent enabling program offered by another Australian university.

To be eligible for an offer, you must have:

  • completed a Certificate III (or equivalent qualification) in a related field; or
  • completed a Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma (or an equivalent qualification) in any field.

If you have not successfully completed senior secondary, tertiary or TAFE/VET study, but have relevant work and life experience you can complete a personal competency statement. You may be eligible for an offer if you have work and life experiences that demonstrate a capacity to succeed in this course.

If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors, including economic hardship, serious medical condition or disability.

We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course. Special consideration is not available for international applicants.

All international students will need to meet the minimum English Language Requirements, University General Entry Requirements and any course specific requirements such as pre-requisite subjects, if applicable.

This degree requires an IELTS (Academic) of 6.0, with no individual band less than 5.5, or a PTE Academic score of 50, with no score lower than 42 or equivalent.

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.

Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires the completion of qualifications equivalent to a 12th year of education in Australia.

You can also meet the General Entry Requirement for this course with the following qualifications or prior studies:

  • Completion of an equivalent AQF Certificate IV or above
  • Complete or incomplete (minimum 25 credit points) of previous tertiary study at Bachelor level or higher

What you will learn

  • 1 Use general and technical knowledge from disciplines in the Bachelor of Arts to identify and reflect on social, cultural, political, ethical or environmental issues in local, cross-cultural and/or global contexts and their impacts
  • 2 Communicate by written, oral and technology supported modes to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • 3 Define and solve problems applying knowledge and technical skills as a basis for decision-making and planning
  • 4 Apply disciplinary knowledge and skills to demonstrate initiative, resilience, accountability, and social responsibility; whether working independently or in collaboration with others.
  • Course structure

    The Diploma of Arts requires the completion of 100 credit points comprising:

    • A 100 credit point major or;
    • 100 credit points of Discipline Elective units

    Please note that the minimum completion time is three years for students commencing a major with no prior study in the area. Students following the standard progression in a major will only be able to study the course part-time. A major is an area of focus in your degree. During your studies, you'll choose an area that interests you, and then study a group of units related to that area. Find out more at What is a Major?

    Students completing the Discipline Electives pathway may complete the course in one year, depending on unit selection and pre-requisites. You may complete any unit from any of the majors in the schedule as a Discipline Electives.
