Dr W.M. Strong of Port Moresby, by his will in 1946, bequeathed his residuary estate amounting to £35,000 to the University of Sydney for the purpose of encouraging education and research in subjects relevant to the particular needs of the then territory of Papua. In Semester 1, 2014, one Walter Mersh Strong Scholarship is available to an academically meritorious postgraduate international student from Papua New Guinea, to undertake one of the following courses: Master of Agriculture, Master of Public Health, Master of International Public Health, Master of Education or Master of Social Work. The Scholarship recipient is invited to enjoy the Sydney experience at one of the finest institutions of higher education in the world. Only citizens from Papua New Guinea can apply.
