About this course

The Postgraduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy (PGDipSurgAnat) is a one-year programme providing instruction in clinically relevant anatomy to New Zealand registered medical practitioners or those with an equivalent overseas qualification.

The majority of participants are doctors in their first four years of postgraduate training who are intending to pursue careers in various fields of surgery or radiology.

The programme consists of four taught papers, and includes both distance learning and two separate two-week periods of cadaver dissection and intensive campus-based instruction. Successful participants will gain an internationally recognised qualification from the University of Otago.

Applications open on 1 September each year and should be submitted by 31 October.

The on-campus (Dunedin) teaching dates for 2024 are

- Monday 1 July until Friday 12 July and
- Monday 4 November until Friday 15 November

Candidates are expected to attend both on-campus teaching blocks.

Entry requirements

  1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
  2. Every applicant shall have been admitted to the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of a university in New Zealand or hold an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
