About this course

A rewarding career that combines technical skill, patient care and medical knowledge

Use ultrasound to assist in the diagnosis of a wide range of medical and health conditions with a Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound. This course will teach you the principles of ultrasound technology and give you the skills to undertake a range of examination practices including abdominal, obstetric, vascular and musculoskeletal ultrasound.

With a major shortage of trained and qualified Accredited Medical Sonographers you will be in-demand from the moment you graduate.

Note: To join the course you must source an industry based, supervised clinical ultrasound training position.

Study a Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound at UC and you will:
  • be able to apply knowledge of the physical principles, instrumentation, and skills in the use of medical ultrasound equipment
  • be able to integrate your understanding of anatomy, standard variants, and pathology as depicted in medical ultrasound
  • apply and demonstrate knowledge of ultrasound scanning techniques, image and information acquisition and perform ultrasound examinations
  • critically evaluate your sonography practice skills and undertake ultrasound examinations in a professional, safe and ethical manner
  • upon completion, become a recognised Australian trained, ASAR Accredited Medical Sonographer
  • be confident that you have the necessary skills and qualifications required to be accepted at almost any entry-level Medical Sonographer position anywhere in the world.

Work Integrated Learning

To gain entry to the Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound you must provide evidence that you have a clinical training placement in an appropriately supervised ultrasound department.

Your concurrent clinical work and online study will enhance your employability and ensure you have the right mix of skills, knowledge, and experience to move seamlessly into your chosen career.

This course requires the completion of 2000 hours of supervised ultrasound experience under the supervision of an Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR) Accredited Medical Sonographer. Applicants are responsible for organising their own training position.

Career opportunities

There is currently a major world shortage of experienced and qualified medical sonographers; and with an ever-increasing aging population, the deficit is expected to get worse.

There has never been a better time to consider a career as a medical Sonographer, especially one with UC qualification. Our smaller, more personal study environments offer students the chance to get a more tailored training experience resulting in a higher level of qualified graduates.

A career as a medical sonographer will allow you to work in the following areas in both Australia and overseas:

  • public hospitals
  • private hospitals

  • Applications Specialist
  • research, teaching, education and more.
