About this course

This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry who are seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency to operate the engines of a vessel as a:
1. chief engineer on a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power <500 kW <EEZ
2. chief engineer on a vessel with an outboard engine of unlimited propulsion power <EEZ
3. second engineer on a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power <750 kW <EEZ
4. assist an engineer in any tasks that may be required on board while working under the general supervision of the person in charge of the vessel's engines <EEZ
5. work in the engine room of a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power <3000 kW <EEZ
Applicants for a Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 NC Certificate of Competency should be aware of the following eligibility requirements:
- Sea service completed on form AMSA 771:
With approved Task Book = At least 20 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with propulsion power ≥75 kW that includes at least 10 days on a vessel with an inboard diesel engine.
Without approved Task Book = At least 60 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with propulsion power ≥75 kW that includes at least 30 days on a vessel with an inboard diesel engine.
- Eyesight and Medical requirements:
Complete Certificate of Medical Fitness form AMSA 559
Complete Eyesight Test Certificate AMSA 542
- First Aid
HLTAID011 or higher first aid certificate
- Final Assessment
Completed AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA)
- Application From and Lodgement
Complete AMSA CoC Application Form via AMSA website (www.amsa.gov.au)
Lodge application and pay fee at AMSA approved Australia Post outlet (see www.amsa.gov.au for more information)

Taught on-campus over 11 days, you'll attend classes Monday - Friday. This immersive learning is designed to give you the skills you need quicker, getting you back on the water in no time!
And when you're finished, you'll be able to work onboard a commercial vessel as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 provided you meet all of the course prerequisites.
