Certificate
This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency to command and operate the engines of a vessel:
<12 m in length
with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or <500 kW for an inboard engine
that is in inshore waters or designated waters (typically within 15 nautical miles of the Australian coast)
or
as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Applicants for a Coxswain Grade 1 NC Certificate of Competency should be aware of the following eligibility requirements:
- Sea service completed on form AMSA 771:
With approved Task Book = At least 30 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel ≥5 m long, working in a deck capacity or working both in a deck capacity and an engineering capacity
Without approved Task Book = At least 150 days qualifying sea service on a commercial or recreational vessel ≥5 m long, working in a deck capacity or working both in a deck capacity and an engineering capacity
- Eyesight and Medical requirements:
Complete Certificate of Medical Fitness form AMSA 559
Complete Eyesight Test Certificate AMSA 542
- Marine Radio Operator licence
Hold a Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) or higher
- First Aid
HLTAID011 or higher first aid certificate
- Application From and Lodgement
Complete AMSA CoC Application Form via AMSA website (www.amsa.gov.au)
Lodge application and pay fee at AMSA approved Australia Post outlet (see www.amsa.gov.au for more information)
This course will teach you how to command and operate the engines of a vessel:

Or
As a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Taught on-campus over four weeks, you'll attend classes Monday - Friday. This immersive learning is designed to give you the skills you need quicker, getting you back on the water in no time!
And when you've finished this course, you'll be able to work as a skipper, master of vessel up to 12 metres and up to 500 kW, gaining real-world experience as you decide where you'd like to go next.
That might mean studying a Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal), or a Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal). Both of these courses will give you specialised skills and help further your employment opportunities in the industry you love.
