About this course

This qualification applies to people working in the maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency to:
- Command and operate the engines of a vessel:
<12 m in length with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or <100 kW for an inboard engine in sheltered waters or within 5 nautical miles (nm) from point of departure, shore base or aquaculture lease
- Command and operate the engines of a vessel:
as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nm of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or <100 kW for an inboard engine.
This Certificate of Competency may be endorsed for the following operations on application to AMSA:
- Operate the engines of a vessel up to 500kW for inboard engines and unlimited power for outboard engines
Applicants for a Coxswain Grade 2 NC Certificate of Competency should be aware of the following eligibility requirements:
- Sea service completed on form AMSA 771:
With approved Task Book = At least 10 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel ≥5 m long, working in a deck capacity or working both in a deck capacity and an engineering capacity
Without approved Task Book = At least 50 days qualifying sea service on a commercial or recreational vessel ≥5 m long, working in a deck capacity or working both in a deck capacity and an engineering capacity
- Eyesight and Medical requirements:
Complete Certificate of Medical Fitness form AMSA 559
Complete Eyesight Test Certificate AMSA 542
- Marine Radio Operator licence
Hold a Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) or higher if the vessel to be operated is fitted with a VHF radio
- First Aid
HLTAID011 or higher first aid certificate
- Application From and Lodgement
Complete AMSA CoC Application Form via AMSA website (www.amsa.gov.au)
Lodge application and pay fee at AMSA approved Australia Post outlet (see www.amsa.gov.au for more information)



















The Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2) will give you the skills to:
1. Command and operate the engines of a commercial vessel up to 12m in length with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or <100 kW for an inboard engine that is within sheltered waters or within 5 nautical miles (nm) from point of departure, shore base or aquaculture lease
2. Command and operate the engines of a vessel as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nm of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or <100 kW for an inboard engine
Taught on-campus for four weeks, you'll attend classes three days a week. This immersive course means you'll be qualified quicker, getting you back out on the water and using your new skills in no time!
The face-to-face nature of this course also means you'll work closely with our expert teachers who will guide your learning every step of the way, increasing your confidence when it comes to applying what you're learning.
When you complete this course, you'll be qualified to work onboard a commercial vessel as a Coxswain Grade 2, gaining hands-on experience while you take the time to decide your next career move.

MAR20321 - Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal)
MAR30921 - Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal)

Operating inboard and outboard motors, abandoning ship procedures, fighting and minimising fire onboard a vessel, basic WHS/OHS concepts, using survival craft and equipment, using seamanship skills aboard a vessel, following environmental regulations and practices, manoeuvring a small vessel.
