About this course

The award of the postgraduate Master of Engineering Science (Civil Structures) is for students who wish to become competent professional structural engineers equipped with advanced discipline-specific knowledge and skills for the design and analysis of building and civil structures, as well as the advanced uses of both ordinary and new construction materials. The course will have an applied industry focus and present a variety of units relevant to professional practice and contemporary minor and major research projects in the field. The skills involved are common to all sizes of organisations, including public sector, private sector and non-profit.

Course structure

The Master of Engineering Science (Civil Structures) consists of 13 units of study (200 credit points). Units normally carry 12.5 credit points, whilst the Major Research Project (CVE80016) unit carries 50 credit points. In each academic year, two units (25 credit points) per semester would normally constitute a part-time load and four units (50 credit points) per semester constitute a full-time load. The average weekly workload of a typical part-time student is expected to be 25 hours of personal study and class attendance time combined. For full-time students this would equate to 50 hours per week. To qualify for the Master of Engineering Science (Civil Structures), students are required to complete 13 units (200 credit points) comprising:

6 discipline-specific units (75 credit points)
4 elective units (50 credit points)
1 research paper unit (12.5 credit points)
1 research methods unit (12.5 credit points)
1 major research project unit (50 credit points)
