About this course

The Master of Specialist Teaching (STEM) is designed for teachers looking to specialise and develop program leadership in the cross-discipline teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or those teaching 'out-of-field' with a desire to gain advanced skills and knowledge in a Victorian Department of Education priority curriculum area.
This program is delivered online and part-time over 3 years. After a common 4 units at the start of the degree, students may exit with a Graduate Certificate. Students completing the graduate Certificate foundation course may then progress onto a Professional project to complete their Masters Degree. The Projection project is scaffolded via two project research-oriented units to prepare for the project of mini-thesis. The reminder of study involves a singular project base program. You will undertake a professional inquiry project of your choice often in the context of your place of employment, or a minor thesis completed in STE(A)M Education.
You will develop an in-depth understanding of the content and cutting edge pedagogical knowledge needed to teach STEM, including Design led STE(A)M, in Years 7-10 as well as an appreciation of the critical role that design thinking, technological comprehension, creativity and innovation in real world contexts play in the engagement of students. A focus on progressive techniques in teaching the cross-discipline field of STE(A)M will be explored through content in general science, sustainability, concepts in engineering applications, mathematics and technologies. Inclusive teaching approaches are examined as a way to support, extend and manage student diversity in a range of contexts.
Developing an applied synthesis of understanding of the teaching and learning of STE(A)M is a feature of this degree. The program will explore the choice, nature, and use of the STE(A)M sub-disciplines to enhance the enjoyment of learning mathematics, science, engineering and technologies in the development of useful learning products, projects and systems.
You will explore ethical issues posed in everyday life where scientific and technological advances mean that people potentially have more choices than they would otherwise.
Our program allows you the option to exit with a Graduate Certificate in Specialist Teaching (Science Education).
We encourage you to view our recent webinar to find out more about the course.

The degree can be completed part-time over three years.
