About this course

This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to understand, educate and support families experiencing mental health difficulties within the first twelve months following childbirth. Explore intermediary and complex understandings of infant and mother perinatal mental health, combining the study of the mother's (family) mental health and the infant's mental health.

Clinical support and collaboration with other mental health and interdisciplinary health professionals will play a vital role in building foundation skills to identify, screen, treat and manage mental health conditions in the perinatal period as well as better understand the normal adjustment to pregnancy and infant development.

Infant observation and reflective practice will focus on core components in working with the mother (carer) - infant dyad to learn the required skills to support parents' self -knowledge, recovery and growth and improve confidence and skills in parenting.

A wide range of career opportunities are available upon graduation in community and institutional workplaces and is suited to those working in nursing, maternity, maternal and child health, social workers or other professionals working with children and families.

This course is only offered part-time (duration is 2 years). It is also available as a graduate certificate and masters option.
