    The Master of Visual Arts degree is suited to both artists who want to deepen their understanding of the contemporary art world, as well as graduates who are changing disciplines and want to pursue and expand their artistic and creative capabilities.

    Entry Requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the Master of Visual Arts, applicants must:

    • hold a Bachelor degree in any discipline from a recognised University with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (using a 7.0 scale)
    • OR hold a Bachelor degree or a Graduate Certificate (or higher) in a cognate discipline from a recognised University with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (using a 7.0 scale) - these students will be eligible for 40 credit points of advanced standing
    • OR hold a Bachelor Honours degree or a Graduate Diploma (or higher) in a cognate discipline from a recognised University with a minimum GPA of 4.0 (using a 7.0 scale) - these students will be eligible for 80 credit points of advanced standing
    • OR have a combination of alternative admission criteria such as formal, informal and non-formal learning deemed to be equivalent to either of the above - these students may be eligible for 10 to 80 credit points of advanced standing
    • AND provide a brief personal statement of 2-3 paragraphs outlining:
      1. Why you want to study a Master of Visual Arts and
      2. A description of the research and/or practical projects that you would like to undertake during the study with reference to the courses and topics in the program that attract your interest.

    To meet academic requirements for Diploma or Advanced Diploma courses, you need to successfully complete any TasTAFE course entry procedures and you also need to:

    • Have completed year 12 and provide TasTAFE with a copy of your Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education awarded to you by an agency or authority of a State or Territory; OR,

    • Provide TasTAFE with a copy of a qualification at Level 4 or above in the Australian Qualifications Framework that was awarded to you. This qualification must have been delivered in English; OR,

    • Complete an approved language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment and display competence at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both literacy and numeracy.

    For admission as a candidate, an applicant will:

    • hold a bachelor degree with first-class or second-class honours (Division A) or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution or
    • hold a masters degree from a recognised institution or equivalent qualification deemed by the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School to be of a standard comparable at least to a bachelor degree with second class honours (Division A) or
    • possess a record of research or a qualification granted by a professional or other body, deemed by the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School to be of a standard comparable at least to a bachelor degree with second-class honours (Division A)
    • have been enrolled in a research Masters degree at the University for not less than one year as a full-time candidate and two years as a part-time candidate and will have had their work as a research Masters candidate certified by the Dean to be of a standard required for candidature in a professional doctorate.

    Students admitted to the Doctor of Musical Arts program will normally have at least five years professional experience.

    A portfolio assessment and/or interview will be part of the admission process. If specialist equipment or computer programs are required, this must be stated within the application. In cases where the candidate does not meet all formal criteria, the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School can establish equivalence on the basis of curriculum vitae, portfolio and publications.

    *You must have completed a substantial research project in your Honours degree equivalent to at least one semester of full-time study (or part-time equivalent).

    Relevant disciplines for previous qualifications

    Relevant disciplines include studies in performance, composition, musicology, or music education*.

    *For the field of music education, a degree qualifying a person to become a classroom music teacher satisfies the requirement.

    You must have completed at least a major, field of study, or approximately 30% of program content in the discipline, including a mix of introductory and advanced courses.

    Student visas

    International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Master of Music are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa (subclass 500).
