    The Master of Creative Writing (MCW) is a 180-credit programme that can follow on immediately from your bachelor's degree in any subject.

    Entry Requirements

    This programme is a selected entry programme. This means there are a number of extra requirements you must meet.

    To enter the Master of Creative Writing you will:

    • have been awarded or qualified for a bachelor's degree with at least a B grade average across the 200 and 300-level specialisation courses, or
    • have a bachelor's with honours degree or a postgraduate diploma in arts in Creative Writing, Expressive Arts or English, with at least a B grade average for the qualification.

    You will be selected into the programme on the basis of a process which includes providing:

    • a summary of your research interests: a brief (one to two paragraphs) outline of your proposed MCW thesis, summarising your proposed creative project (about 70% of the thesis) and proposed critical project (about 30% of the thesis). Please indicate the genre in which you would like to write your creative thesis in this outline. Critical projects usually take the form of a literary essay, a craft essay, or an exegesis
    • a portfolio of your creative writing (please refer below)
    • confirmation that your creative writing portfolio is your own personal work.

    If you have a bachelor's with honours degree or postgraduate diploma in arts in Creative Writing, Expressive Arts or English as outlined above, you may apply for credit towards Part One of the qualification in accordance with the limits specified in the Recognition of Prior Learning regulations.

    You will need to provide verified copies of all academic transcripts for studies taken at all universities other than Massey University.

    As well as the specific entry requirements above, Melbourne Polytechnic admits students on the basis of the following categories:

    If you have already studied higher education: Y ou may meet the admissions criteria for higher education at Melbourne Polytechnic if your highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a higher education course, such as a university degree.

    If you have studied a VET course: You may meet the admissions criteria for higher education at Melbourne Polytechnic if your highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a vocational education and training (VET) course.

    If you have recent secondary education: You may meet the admissions criteria for higher education at Melbourne Polytechnic if you are a recent secondary education student whose admission is primarily based on the completion of Year 12 within the past two years.

    If you have work and life experience: You may meet the admissions criteria for higher education at Melbourne Polytechnic if you have work and life experience and left secondary education more than two years ago and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then.

    Additional entry requirements Applicants must also attend an audition involving participation in Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance Technique, Repertory and Improvisation. The Audition Panel, comprising lecturing staff of the Adelaide College of the Arts and Flinders University and a physiotherapist, will assess and score each student. This score will form part of the non-academic criteria for admission at both TAFE SA and Flinders University. Applicants will be mailed an audition pack by TAFE SA once an application has been submitted and will be contacted to book an audition time. Download brochure Admission pathways Applicants can apply for this course using Year 12 qualifications, previous Higher Education study, TAFE/VET qualifications, or through Adult Entry (STAT/Foundation Studies/tertiary preparation course). For applicants using their SACE (Year 12) results (or equivalent), entry is subject to achieving a minimum selection rank of 60. Applicants who do not meet the University’s minimum entry requirements may still be considered for admission subject to meeting certain conditions. Applicants will start in the TAFE component and upon completing the equivalent of a Certificate III/Diploma (for example) will have their University offer confirmed.
