    New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering

    Are you interested in a career as an Automotive Electrical Engineer? Technology and electronics in the automotive industry are fast developing and growing, meaning skilled Automotive Electricians are highly desirable. If you're working in the industry, this programme is for you.

    Entry Requirements

    For this programme, you'll need one of the following:

    1. Completed the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3); or

    2. Demonstrate the equivalent skills and must be working on approved automotive premises. Find out more about work placement learning here.

    3. If English is not your first language, you need one or more of the following:

    • Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University Entrance
    • Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency
    • Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years

    Don't meet the requirements? We also accept:

    • Be 20 years or older before the start of the programme
    • Provide sufficient evidence of aptitude, appropriate work, or other life experience as approved by the Academic Leader
    • Entry by Discretionary Admission

    New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Electrical)

    Diploma

    Learn about the fundamentals of electrical engineering and develop the extensive practical knowledge required to work in the field of power engineering. This programme also leads to Electrical Service Technician (EST) registration and further opportunity for Electrical Engineer registration with EWRB.

    Entry Requirements

    You will need the following:

    1. Be at least 16 years of old when you start this programme:
    2. A total of NCEA level 2 including a minimum of:

    • 10 literacy credits at level 1 or higher (for those who achieved NCEA Level 2 before 2013); and
    • 48 NCEA credits at level 2 in four subjects, including at least 12 credits in Mathematics (preferably achievement standards in algebra, calculus or trigonometry);

    2. If English is not your first language, you will need one or more of the following:

    • Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University Entrance
    • Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency
    • Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years

    Don't have NCEA? We also accept:

    • An equivalent qualification; or
    • Equivalent credits from appropriate trades training and/or demonstrated skills and experience; or
    • Provide sufficient evidence to be eligible for special or discretionary admission

    Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Electrical)

    Are you passionate about a career in electronic or electrical engineering? The Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Electrical) will equip you with the knowledge and skills for employment as an engineer, specialising in electronics, power, or mechatronics.

    Entry Requirements

    What you will need to study this programme.

    Domestic students
    Academic requirements

    You must have completed at least one of the following:

    • A minimum of 60 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, with at least 3 'C' passes in the New Zealand University Bursaries Examinations;
      • A minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 in Physics and
      • A minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 in Mathematics (including Algebra and calculus); and
      • A minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 in one other subject from the list of approved NZQA UE subjects and
      • A minimum of 18 credits at Level 3 or higher taken from no more than two additional subjects from the approved subjects listed at NZQA;
    • Successful completion of New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Electrical)
    • Equivalent academic qualifications may include:
      • University Bursary with 45% or more in both Physics and Calculus or Algebra or
      • Equivalent Cambridge score; or
      • Equivalent International Baccalaureate
    And meet one of the English entry requirements;
    • University Entrance Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above in English or Maori (5 in Reading, 5 in Writing); or
    • Provide evidence that they have the English language proficiency required for the Programme as demonstrated through evidence of one of the kinds described in NZQA Rules on the Unitec English Language Requirements for International Students Web-page.

    International students Academic requirements

    As a part of this requirement, you must be at least 16 years of age and meet one of the below;

    • Successful completion of New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Electrical)
    • All applicants must be at least 16 years of age when they begin their studies, and they should meet the country-specific admission requirement;

    And English entry requirements;

    If English is not your first language, you will also need at least one of the following qualifications:

    • Evidence of an IELTS (Academic) band score of at least 6 with writing and speaking scores no less than 6.0 and reading and listening bands no less than 5.5; or
    • University Entrance Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above in English or Maori (5 in Reading, 5 in Writing); or
    • Evidence of English language proficiency as outlined in the NZQA Rules on the Unitec English Language Requirements for International Students Web-page.
