    Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree that includes intermediate microeconomics, introductory business finance, a calculus-based mathematics course, and an introductory statistics course, and be approved for entry.

    If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements.

    Students who are at IELTS level 6.0 are welcome to enrol for CCEL English for Academic Purposes 2 (EAP2) online to enhance their English language proficiency. A grade of B+ or higher in this course satisfies UC English language requirements for postgraduate study.

    If you do not have the entry requirement of intermediate level microeconomic theory or business finance, you are welcome to enrol online in either ECON207 Intermediate Microeconomics - Households and Government or FINC201 Business Finance.

    The Master of Economics (MEcon) will equip students to be either professional practitioners or academic researchers in the field of Economics. It can also provide a pathway to doctoral-level study in Economics. The degree consists of both coursework and a research dissertation.

    Entry Requirements

    1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Commerce).
    2. Every applicant must either
      1. be a graduate, and
      2. normally have achieved an average grade of B in the papers satisfying the final year requirements for the degree, including both econometrics and mathematical economics, or
      3. have equivalent alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Commerce).
    3. In considering an applicant's qualifications, regard will be given to the detail of the course of study followed to gain the qualification, as well as the applicant's performance in the programme.

    For this programme, you will need the following:

    1. A recognised degree, a professional qualification in a relevant discipline or the ability to demonstrate competencies equivalent to the above
    2. If you're a graduate of Unitec's Bachelor of Business, you cannot be admitted to the Graduate Diploma in Business in the same specialisation in which you majored in the degree
    3. A minimum of 8 credits at NCEA Level 2 in English (4 in reading, 4 in writing)
    4. If English is your second language, you are required to have one or more of the following:

    • Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University entrance
    • Pearson Test of English (Academic): 50 with no score lower than 50
    • Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency
    • Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years

    Don't meet the requirements? We also accept:

    • Provide sufficient evidence to be eligible for special or discretionary admission; or
    • If you're seeking entry based on work experience, you will be required to demonstrate, in a written application, CV and attestation from suitable referees, that you have substantial professional experience in activities related to this programme, and/or be able to demonstrate equivalent competencies.
