The Doctor of Musical Arts is a three-year full-time programme in Music with three areas of specialisation: Performance, Composition or Studio Production.
The Bachelor of Music (MusB) degree requires three years of full-time or its equivalent in part-time study. The programme totals 360 points and is mainly made up of Music papers but may include up to 90 points (usually five papers) in other subjects.
Entry Requirements
Every programme of study for the degree shall satisfy the requirements for prerequisites, corequisites and restrictions set out in the Prescriptions (published in the Guide to Enrolment).
The Master of Music (MMus) degree requires at least one year of full-time or its equivalent in part-time study. It may be awarded in Composition, Studio Production, or Performance.

Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities).
Every applicant must either
have been admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Music with Honours, or
have been awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Music, or
have alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities).
A degree shall be awarded for published original contributions of special excellence in the appropriate discipline. An individual shall only ever be entitled to be awarded one Higher Doctorate from the University of Otago - applications for multiple Higher Doctorates are not permitted.
Every candidate for a Higher Doctoral degree must have held a degree for at least five years before applying for admission to the degree.
A candidate for the degree shall normally be a graduate of the University of Otago, or shall have completed a substantial proportion of the work to be presented while working in an academic or research unit of the University.
The aim of the Bachelor of Music with Honours (MusB(Hons)) is to enable students to become highly skilled in one (or more) of the following fields of music: musical performance, composition, music research, and recording and production.

Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities).
Every applicant shall have fulfilled one of the following conditions:
have been admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Music with an average grade of at least B+ for the appropriate 300-level papers;
have been admitted with the status of one who is entitled to proceed to the degree;
have a qualification acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and produce evidence acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of ability to proceed to the degree.
A student enrolled for a postgraduate diploma programme may not be admitted retrospectively and transfer to an Honours programme unless he or she would have been eligible for admission at the commencement of the programme and the structure and duration of the postgraduate diploma programme are identical to those for the Honours programme.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Music (PGDipMus) requires one year of full-time or its equivalent in part-time study. It is intended for students who are composers or performers or both.

have been admitted with the status of one who is entitled to proceed to the diploma.
The Bachelor of Performing Arts degree requires three years of full-time study or its equivalent in part-time study and offers specialisations in the combined study of music, theatre and dance.
