    • Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency

    • Provide sufficient evidence of aptitude, appropriate work, or other life experience as approved by the Academic Leader

    On completion of this course, you will be able to service and repair the mechanical parts of motor vehicles such as the engine, transmission and suspension systems.

    Entry Requirements

    Applicants are required to undertake a Pre-Training Review to help confirm the course is suitable. Applicants enrolling as an Apprentice/Trainee must have a registered training contract. Students must be currently employed as an apprentice Mechanic signed up with an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network provider.

    What you will need to study this programme.


    Domestic students Academic requirements

    You must be at least 16 years of age on the date of the programme's commencement for the semester, and you'll need to:

    • NCEA Level 1 in Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science; Or
    • Equivalent.
    • And have the necessary English language proficiency, a minimum of NCEA (Level 1) English or have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years.

    International students Academic requirements

    As a part of this requirement, you must meet at least 16 years of age and meet one of the below;

    • All applicants must be at least 16 years of age when they begin their studies, and they should meet the country-specific admission requirement;
    • And English entry requirements;
      • If English is not your first language, you will also need at least one of the following qualifications:
        • Evidence of an overall IELTS (General or Academic) band score of at least 5 in each band; Or
        • Equivalent described in NZQA Rules and on the Unitec English Language Requirements for International Students

    • Successful completion of New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering; Or
    • higher, or a comparable qualification in a relevant discipline or as approved by the Academic Leader; Or
    • 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher including (including 20 credits at Level 3 in any two of the following domains: Physics, Mathematics with Calculus, Statistics and Modelling, or any other relevant technical domain as approved by the Academic Leader):
      • 14 credits in two different approved subjects; and
      • 14 credits from up to two subjects (approved or non-approved)
    And meet one of the English entry requirements;
    • University Entrance Literacy: 8 credits at Level 2 or above in English or Maori (4 in Reading, 4 in Writing); or
    • Evidence of English language proficiency as outlined in the NZQA Rules on the Unitec English Language Requirements for International Students Web-page.

    • If English is not your first language, you will also need at least one of the following qualifications:
      • Evidence of an IELTS (Academic) band score of at least 6 with no band score lower than 5.5
      • University Entrance Literacy: 8 credits at Level 2 or above in English or Maori (4 in Reading, 4 in Writing); or
      • Evidence of English language proficiency as outlined in the NZQA Rules on the Unitec English Language Requirements for International Students Web-page.
